The Crony Capitalist War of greed against U.S. Public Education

‘Greed destroying public education

Crazy Normal - the Classroom Exposé

There are several forms of Capitalism in use throughout the world. Economics Help.org defines them and reports that Crony Capitalism is what’s used in the United States. The Age of Crony Capitalism says, “For most of US history, crony capitalism has been in a struggle with free-market capitalism for the heart and soul of the American economy.  For the past half century, crony capitalism has been gaining the upper hand.”

In addition, Dr. Gary G. Kohls of Global Resaerch.ca says, “The 12 years of unrestrained crony capitalism during the anti-democracy mis-leadership of Republican presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush tricked most of us into naively believing in their fraudulent ‘Trickle-down Economics’.”

Crony Capitalism is a term used to refer to the situation where business success is related to strategic influences with civil servants, politicians and those in authority. It could be used to refer to situations in early…

Who Wrote the New CREDO Study? And What Do They Really Want?

Who Wrote the New CREDO Study? And What Do They Really Want?.

The Hoover institution is also housed at Stanford.  In “Waiting for Superman,” the film cites Eric E. Hanushek – of value added measure fame – as being a professor at Stanford, without mentioning his ties to the Hoover Institution.  Stanford seems to have strong libertarian think tanks connected with the school, and CREDO is the educational arm.  Even the acronym is hilarious.  They seem to be saying “Please accept our findings on faith.”

(thanks to Ken Derstine for alerting me to this study via Bloggers Network)

My, my… the charter spin doctors are working overtime. It was CREDO who in 2008 provided a study that is widely cited because it documented that, “Thirty‐seven percent of the charters in this study produce learning gains that are significantly worse than what equivalent.”

I guess they needed to produce a counter-narrative to cover their tracks?

But who does the research for this new CREDO study? Perchance do they have ulterior motives for promoting a pro charter study?

Let’s start with the funders. Walton is a familiar name to us all by now. CREDO receives funding from the Walton Family Foundation.

Ravitch also covers the inside workings of CREDO in this report, as does Crazy Crawfish.

And Who Does CREDO Employ?

Margaret Macke Raymond is the Director or CREDO. She is also a fellow at Hoover Institute. According to…

Education Talk New Orleans

Children should not be punished because adults violated the law. Children should not be punished because adults violated the law.

For many years parents and special education advocates have alerted the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) of special education violations in the charter system in New Orleans. Years before the creation of the Recovery School District (RSD), I did the same with the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB). In my experience as an advocate, the problems we saw with OPSB schools and special education, pale in comparison to what we see now with this new landscape of public education in New Orleans. Worse yet, the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) and the LDOE believes that an adequate solution to the special education violations at Lagniappe Academies, is to close the school. These same entities did not exact that punishment on other schools in New Orleans that also violated special education laws. The Southern Poverty Law Center…

Updated: @TeachForAmerica tried to disappear their disappearing act

Don’t know what Justin was thinking!!!!

Cloaking Inequity

Honestly, I would really like to write about something beside TFA today. But I can’t. In the post Do you have five minutes to understand whether @TeachForAmerica is effective? I posted the following figure from Bloomberg.

Screen Shot 2015-03-10 at 9.41.57 AM

In the story Most Teach For America Instructors Plan to Flee TeachingAkane Otani noted in the article,

More than 87 percent of TFA teachers say they don’t plan on remaining teachers throughout their careers, compared with 26.3 percent of non-TFA teachers working in the same subjects, grades, and schools.

To cover this up, TFA’s lobbyist have been busy beavers in Texas. TFA’s lobbyist and Rep Justin Rodriguez are trying to hide the fact that TFA teachers in the latest data (as of last week) are now reporting incredible future turnover rates. They have written HB 1060 to disappear TFA’s disappearing act.

Who is currently lobbying for TFA in Texas? How much are they spending? Thanks to Karen in…

Smarter Balanced Offers Tips for Monitoring Students on Social Media

The sneakiest component of this “monitoring” is the potential use of a school social media site to track students without their knowing.

deutsch29

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) offers the following tips to SBAC schools for monitoring students on social media. The excerpt below is from a single-page document entitled, “Guidance for Social Media Monitoring During the Field Test.”

The SBAC-suggested keys to successful social media “test security trolling”?

1) Set up a school social media site, and encourage students to join.

2) Search social media sites by keyword.

Click on the document below to read for yourself. (Click on image to enlarge.)

There is more to this letter than is shown in the image above. The full document can be read here.

John White Now Chairs Jeb Bush’s Seriously-dwindling “Chiefs for Change”

MORE #CharterChicanery

deutsch29

Louisiana Superintendent John White has just been made chair of Jeb Bush’s privatizing-reform superintendent’s club, Chiefs for Change.

Now, that reads really fancy, until one notices that Jeb’s little club is, well, little.

As of March 10, 2015, it boasts only four members, down from 13 in October 2014.

Ouch.

Reminds me of dwindling PARCC— also once connected to Jeb Bush via his headquarter turf, the State of Florida.

But back to “failing” Chiefs for Change:

So, White is “leading” three other “chiefs”: Rhode Island’s Deborah Gist; Delaware’s Mark Murphy, and New Mexico’s Hannah Skandera.

It’s not just the few that is unimpressive here. It’s the who.

Let’s start with Gist:

Deborah Gist is on her way out as RI state super and will land in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where her new appointment sparked a teacher protest. Even though Arne Duncan put his federal nose in RI business by trying to…
